Caring Cross-generational Networking Strategy

The Briefing Session on CIIF 20th Batch Application organised at the Hong Kong Central Library on 13 August 2012 attracted over 240 prospective applicants in attendance. The experience and views shared by guest speakers from different perspectives on cross-generational caring under different social capital strategy and the questions actively raised by participants inspired the floor to consider new ideas and approaches on how to mobilise cross-generational networking to develop social capital.

Academic Perspective: Social Capital and Cross-generational Inclusion


Professor Alfred Chan, Chair Professor of Social Gerontology, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, Lingnan University and CIIF SC.Net Member


First, Professor Alfred Chan, Chair Professor of Social Gerontology, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, Lingnan University and CIIF SC.Net Member shared on using cross-generational strategy for social capital development. Prof Chan elaborated on the measurement for the different dimensions of social capital in cross-generational perspective. Lastly, he summed up the four keys to social capital building in the "COKE" (Communication, Organisation, Knowledge and Evaluation) Approach".

Sharing on Practical Experience (I):
Cross-generational Inclusion and Caring Network – Experience Sharing on "Elderly Shop" and "The Harmonious Home"


Ms Lai Wai-tsz, Centre Manager, The Salvation Army Chuk Yuen Integrated Service Senior Citizens Talent Advancement Project Tung Tau Centre and CIIF SC.Net Member


Ms Lai Wai-tsz, Centre Manager, The Salvation Army Chuk Yuen Integrated Service Senior Citizens Talent Advancement Project Tung Tau Centre and CIIF SC.Net Member shared her experience on the CIIF-funded Project "Elderly Shop" and "The Harmonious Home". She elaborated on how her elderly centre leveraged on its advantages and resources in the community to engage people of different ages to join the projects for six years where a platform for cross-generational networking was developed. Three project participants from different age groups (including a grandmother – Aunt Yee Sheung, two students – Hiu Man and Ka Wai) also shared their personal experience on the Project and subsequent changes.
Another remarkable feature of the Project was the collaboration among different professional sectors, including business, schools and local organisations, which enhanced social inclusion and mutual help in the community.

Sharing on Practical Experience (II):
"Splendid Teen-Aunt" Cross-generational Partnership – Experience Sharing on "Splendid Fashion"


Ms Jolie Wong, Project Coordinator,Ms Tracy Ng (Supervisor of "Splendid Fashion" and CIIF SC.Net Member) and Ms Crystal Ma (Fashion Design Student, Hong Kong Design Institute)


Next experience sharing was "Splendid Fashion" by Lok Kwan Social Service. Ms Jolie Wong, Project Coordinator shared the process of project design, main idea and features of the Project by starting from a fashion show presented by middle-aged female garment workers and young local fashion designers. Ms Wong pointed out that the success of the Project hinged on the collaboration among different professional sectors and mutual trust cross-generational networking, which underpinned the spirit of reciprocity.
After a series of sharing, Ms Tracy Ng (Supervisor of "Splendid Fashion" and CIIF SC.Net Member) and Ms Crystal Ma (Fashion Design Student, Hong Kong Design Institute) shared on how their close and trustful relationship, like a mother-daughter one, was forged through their participation in the Project. Their moving stories shared in earnest are testimony to the power of cross-generational networking for mutual trust and support.

Briefing on Application Conditions and Procedures, Funding Mechanism, Assessment Criteria and Assessment Framework

At last, Ms Winnie Ying and Mr Brian Wong, Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General (Project Management) of the CIIF Secretariat respectively, outlined the application conditions and procedures for CIIF fund, funding mechanism, all 11 assessment criteria in four aspects, and the three-tier assessment framework. They also reminded prospective applicants to check properly all the necessary documents and relevant proofs attached before submitting their applications.
